The London Communiqué confirms that issues surrounding international trade have moved up the G20 agenda. The commitments made could have been much stronger, but I believe that what was agreed on protectionism can be graded as “not bad”. On the Doha Round, the Summit’s pledge was pitiful – it should be graded “very sad”.

The G20 Summit: Accomplishments beyond expectation
Jeffrey Sachs, 3 April 2009
The G20 came through. What I witnessed as a member of Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon's delegation was deeply heartening. The leaders were serious, consequent, and - yes - even efficient in their work.

G20 Summit: Reasons to be cheerful
Avinash Persaud, 3 April 2009
The G20 summit will not mark a turning point in the path of this crisis; but it provides the strongest reason yet to be less pessimistic about the future. The 29-point communiqué sets out a clear path for a sustainable recovery and lays down sensible principles to guide the recovery and its aftermath. Gordon Brown and his fellow leaders deserve praise. The devil is in the details.

Jonathan Portes provides us with an articulate and elaborate presentation of the outcome of the G20 summit. This is the best that can be said about it, but is it the most appropriate as well? I don’t think so, but let me start with a disclaimer.

L Alan Winters, 2 April 2009
VoxEU generated a hugely stimulating debate in the run-up to the London Summit, proposing, analysing, or refining many of the issues that figure in the final outcome – as well as many that do not. This note offers some personal reflections on the outcome of the Summit and the VoxEU debate.

Restoring the G20's credibility on trade: Plan B and the WTO trade talks
Richard Baldwin, Simon J Evenett, 13 December 2008
Reputations rise and fall faster than ever. It took 25 years for the G7 to demonstrate its annual meetings were little more than a vacuous photo-op. It has taken just 25 days for the G20’s commitments to be proven hollow.

What the G20 should do on November 15th to fix the financial system
Barry Eichengreen, Richard Baldwin, 10 November 2008
Leaders of the G20 nations are meeting this weekend to discuss financial markets and the world economy. Announced just a few weeks ago, this summit is both very unprepared and very important. The world economy and world financial markets are in a delicate state.
